Weekly Experiences
In Gants Hill this week the children have been using lots of paint and paper to make tyre tracks with the cars. This activity has provided a fun way to get our boys more involved with creative projects in addition it is a great combination of play, painting and printing. Each vehicle produced different patterns and thicknesses. This activity enhanced children’s fine motor skills by holding vehicles and their gross motor skills by rolling back and forth. It also provided great communication opportunities for all who joined in.

The children in Rainbowfish room, South Woodford have been exploring blue cucumber water. This sensory activity offers the children the chance to use their touch, sight and smell to engage with the cucumber water (and even taste!). The children loved to squeeze the cucumber, swirl it around in the water and pop out the seeds. Children at this young age learn best when their senses are stimulated, they are then motivated to participate fully. Learning from this activity occurs across the prime areas of learning (Personal, social and emotional, Communication and language and Physical development).

In Gants Hill the children have been dancing in the drama session, Hilary Hazel runs weekly sessions for music and movement in each room in the nursery. Hilary focuses on different festivals and uses a wide range of multi-cultural instruments and music with the children. This week Hilary Hazel used the story ‘The Tiger Child’ written by Joanna Troughton, the children moved and danced to the background music using materials to express their movements.

The children in Stingrays room South Woodford have been printing using apples. They have been creating a simple number line to introduce mathematic language in an appropriate way. The children loved to create the pictures using the apples for their new display. This type of creative activity encourages children to join in and be interested in what is happening. They are keen to print using the apples and it helps to foster curiosity in them. This curiosity then helps them to seek out further opportunities to progress with their learning.

In Gants Hill the children have been engaging in ball play. All children can benefit from rolling, throwing, catching, kicking, and dribbling balls. These activities improve motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and timing. Ball skills are an important part of the developmental progression for children, so introducing these skills at a younger age will aid their development. Some of the younger children enjoyed the activity so much they crawled into the large container holding the balls.

The children in Sharks room South Woodford have been making the most of the pumpkins that have been left over from Halloween, and have been exploring them whilst in the garden. The children have been cutting them using safe utensils, and using their language skills to describe the texture of what they are feeling. The children extended this play further by engaging in pretend play, and begun to ‘Make soup’!

In Gants Hill the children have been playing a variety of board games with the children to encourage their listening skills and help promote group participation. This also supports children to take turns with their peers. Board games play a crucial role in children's development and growth. It is an important aspect of brain development as they help acquire logical and reasoning skills, boost critical thinking and gain spatial reasoning.

The children in Starfish room South Woodford have been once again the budding scientists and have been discovering what happens when raisins are dropped into a glass of bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and water. The chemical reaction that occurs when the bicarbonate of soda and the vinegar combine, creates carbon dioxide, which cover the raising, and the raisins are then lifted in the water. These experiments help children to develop their observational and questioning skills and widens the breadth of their knowledge.

Activity of the week:
The winner this week is Zareen (SW). Zareen has planned a clever activity to help a child achieve an expressive arts and design next step step. They will use foam and food colouring in a zip lock bag to explore what happens when colours are mixed and how they change. This is a great way to get the children to be able to control how the colours are mixed and observe what happens. This activity is then extended by asking the children to find objects within the room of the colours they can see in their zip-lock bags.
